Having a baby always entails a lot of planning ahead. As soon as parents know they are expecting, the best thing to do aside from saving up is to make a list of all the things they need to purchase before their little bundle of joy arrives. Although coming up with a list of things to buy will entail making major decisions over certain choices. Things like whether the baby will be breastfed or bottle-fed, whether the baby will sleep in his or her own crib or co-sleep with parents, whether the baby should use a pacifier or not, etc.
One of the major dilemmas parents have to face these days is whether to go with a cloth diaper solution or disposable ones. Let’s start by comparing before you make that major choice.
First, let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages of cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are surely the way to go for people who are thinking of going green. With the clamor about disposable diapers making up a large portion of the garbage in landfills, a lot of parents nowadays are thinking of going with cloth diapers. But before you make that huge decision, you need to consider whether you have the time, energy, and resources to put up with the proper cleaning and maintenance of cloth diapers. The need to dispose of fecal matter, to clean the diaper, to soak, and finally to wash it and make sure that it is clean – these are the usual drawbacks of using cloth diapers. To add to that, try to imagine using cloth diapers while you travel with your little one. Just imagine how often you need to change his or her nappies. Although most cloth diaper users attest to the fact that cloth diapers rarely cause rashes and are also a lot more affordable in the long run.
But most modern parents with very busy lifestyles opt for disposable diapers. Number one reason would be the convenience. It is less messy and there is no maintenance required right after you change your baby’s diapers with a fresh one. Aside from that, there are just so many disposable diapers out there that are the product of years of research. Some have really lightweight material and can absorb so much liquid thus lessening the number of times you’d have to change your baby’s diapers. The major setback though would be how many different ones you’d have to try before you find one that works best for your baby’s skin. Some research also points to the health hazards certain chemicals and other materials in disposable diapers might contain but then again, there is no solid proof as of yet.
Whichever type of diaper you choose, what matters most is that you have your child’s best interest in mind.
